During the years of 2018 and 2019, the French Development Agency-AFD, carried out several studies, that identified the challenges and opportunities to strengthen the supply of fine and aromatic cacao which was certified in international organic and fair trade standards in Ecuador, Peru and Colombia.
The potential to increase the supply of sustainable cacao consistently is linked to the reported supply given by the national cacao sustainability platforms (Switzerland, Germany), new entry requirements at the country level (Holland) and specific demand from chocolate companies in Europe (France, Switzerland especially). At the regional level, this project is coordinated by Agronomists and Veterinarians Without Borders and in Colombia the operator is Swisscontact.
The project aims to promote the competitiveness and sustainability of fine organic, aromatic and sustainable cacao chain in favorable national contexts. This shall be achieved through the implementation of appropriate policies and strategies as well as through the strengthening of producer organisations' capabilities. One of the project's goals is to create synergies between actors in the cacao chain to implement actions, to promote organic, sustainable and fair-trade cacao production initiatives, valuing artisanal production and local varieties. It further promotes the exchange of experiences between the three countries to address the common challenges they face, sharing experiences and technical references and prepare agendas to implement solutions. The project is carried out with 16 producer organisations, distributed in 7 departments of the country.
