Agreement signing ceremony between Uttoron and Sylhet City Corporation was held on 2nd September 2021 in Westin Dhaka aiming to create skilled workforce.

Currently in Bangladesh 4.4 million people are related to economic activities and the labour force is increasing by 1.3 million every year. Presently 60.7 million people are working actively. A large amount of population is unemployed, and COVID-19 just worsened the situation. To mitigate the challenge and to build a skilled workforce Uttoron signed an agreement with Sylhet City Corporation (SCC) on 2nd September 2021 in Westin Dhaka.

Achieving Bangladesh Government’s SDG goals and Skills Development Policy 2011 is the main aim of this Public-Private Partnership. Uttoron will work closely with SCC to transform an existing infrastructure into a training facility. This facility will have capacity to provide training service to 800 youth annually on four trades (electrical installation and maintenance, welding, plumbing pipe-fitting and housekeeping).

A platform to kick-start technical and vocational careers of youths

The agreement signing ceremony was graced with the presence of Ariful Haque, Honourable Mayor Sylhet City Corporation, Eric M. Walker, President Chevron Bangladesh, MD. Imrul Kabir, Director Corporate Affairs Chevron Bangladesh and Mujibul Hasan, Country Director Swisscontact among other distinguished guests.

At the signing ceremony Mayor of SCC said “Low skill labour is a big challenge for us. By providing necessary training and equipping them for the market's ever-changing demands and by working through this partnership, we will be able to set a new benchmark for successful Public-Private-Partnership and be a role model for others." Later he thanked to Chevron and Swisscontact for taking such a noble initiative.

"The training facility will provide an excellent platform to kick-start the technical and vocational careers of thousands of aspirational youths, bringing about long-term, sustainable improvements for them, and the families that depend on them. Education and job training are of critical importance to help people and communities thrive. The key here is to ensure that Uttoron is sustainable."
