New Training Kitchen to Support Apprenticeship and National Skills Development Initiatives

A new training facility for off-the-job training of cook apprentices of dual apprenticeship training was launched on the 25th of January 2020 at the Government Technical Institute (GTI) Insein, Yangon. The training kitchen is a result of the partnership between the Ministry of Education (MOE) and the Vocational Skills Development Program (VSDP).

The cook training kitchen was designed as a 5-star level professional kitchen and features 2 theory classrooms, kitchen, dining room, demonstration kitchen, separate changing rooms for males and females, preparation area, bakery room, food storage area, dishwashing room and offices.  In addition to the purpose of training the cook apprentices, the training kitchen already opened its doors to related national skills testing and skills development activities for food production occupations. 

H.E. Dr. Myo Thein Gyi, the Union Minister for Education, H.E. Mr. Tim Enderlin, the Ambassador of Switzerland to Myanmar, representatives from Swisscontact Myanmar, development partners and organisations, and partner hotels and restaurants attended the launch ceremony.

Vocational skills development is an integral part of the National Education Strategic Plan 2016-2021 under the responsibility of the Ministry of Education. Dual Apprenticeship Training, a pioneering skills development initiative of its kind in Myanmar, has been receiving critical support from national and local authorities, and private sector partners. Currently, it partners with 3 government ministries and 20 private sector companies.

The 18-month long dual apprenticeship training for cook and agricultural machinery mechanic occupations is adapted from the Swiss dual training approach. Plans are already underway to further expand the training in 2020 for more occupational areas where there is market demand.

Dual Apprenticeship Training is one of the components of the Vocational Skills Development Program (VSDP). The VSDP aims to promote improved livelihood opportunities for women and men in targeted areas and occupations in Myanmar. The Program is implemented by Swisscontact Myanmar and financed by the Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation (SDC).
