SCPP succeeded in transforming the entire sector. By making the supply chain more inclusive, innovative, and resilient, it has produced lasting impact on Indonesia’s cacao production.

SCPP as a single commodity program had succeeded in meeting its target by training more than 165,000 cocoa farmers over a decade. The various trainings not only made farmers realize that cocoa farms must be maintained, but also provided motivation and self-confidence to farmers. With the help of agronomists in the field, this program brought forth local cocoa farmer cadres who are not only able to increase their cocoa production but also to develop their cocoa farming business by becoming breeders, agri-input providers, managing demo plots and being an inspiration for nearby farmers. Around 868 nurseries (70% of the total assisted nurseries by SCPP) are still providing good seeds for surrounding farmers - something that was rarely found in cocoa-producing areas in early years of SCPP.  

This program helped farmers to rely on themselves and their communities, and not to rely too much on assistance provided by government extension workers who have duties in several other commodities besides cocoa. SCPP also facilitated farmers to connect with a wider network and form a learning community that helps them overcome difficulties and challenges in cocoa farming. There were various local farmer forums, both formal and informal, that were formed, and some remained even after the program ended. They were connected either through social media application groups such as Facebook or Whatsapp groups, but some are connected through formal organizations such as cocoa forums. 

Since the beginning, the program had collaborated with the national cocoa forum known as the Cocoa Sustainability Partnership (CSP) to reach all cocoa stakeholders and collaborate with them on strategic issues for cocoa. After SCPP ends, CSP become a forum that is strategically used as a reference for the government for policy and program development in the cocoa sector. The involvement of the company as one of the cocoa stakeholders in CSP also encouraged the development of sustainability in the cocoa sector. Throughout its period, the program collaborated with 11 multinational cocoa buying and processing companies which at the end of the program shows higher commitment to cocoa sector by investing more on training, coaching and transparency within their sustainable supply chain networks.  


Beyond SCPP  

Most of the companies involved in SCPP continued their effort to source from traceable supply chain partners and to enhance farmer’s livelihood. They do put more attention to the capacity of smallholder farmers within their supply chain network; some by having their internal staffs directly train and coach the farmers and some by having service provider like Koltiva to train and coach their producers. Traceable supply system introduced by the program is also widely adopted by the cocoa and chocolate companies, either outsource it to be run by Koltiva or have it embedded into their own (in-house) system. SCPP strengthen the sector’s transparency thus support and ensure sustainability of cocoa supply chain in Indonesia.
